"This is the moment a pavilion at a sacred temple complex burst into flames after a visitor reportedly mishandled incense and candles. The fire broke out at Wenchang Pavilion on Fenghuang Mountain in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, China, on November 12. Dramatic footage shows the three-storey structure engulfed in flames from top to bottom, with thick smoke billowing into the sky as pieces of the roof collapsed. Officials said no casualties were reported and confirmed that the blaze did not spread to nearby forested areas. Investigators stated that early findings indicated the fire was sparked by a traveller's improper use of incense and candles. Authorities added that the pavilion, built in October 2009, contained no cultural relics. They explained that all structures within the temple complex were modern constructions with no surviving ancient architecture. Official notices said the pavilion was commissioned in 2008, built with a reinforced concrete frame, and completed the following year. It had been managed by the neighbouring Yongqing Temple ever since. Historical records note that the original Yongqing Temple dates back many centuries, although the current buildings were rebuilt in the 1990s. Local authorities said further action would be taken based on the ongoing investigation and that fire-prevention measures in the area would be strengthened."
