"Residents of Rio de Janeiro's Mare favela revived the tradition of decorating streets ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For decades, World Cup tournaments transformed neighborhoods across Brazil into colorful spaces decorated with flags, painted streets and football-themed artwork, as residents gathered to celebrate the country's football culture. Although the custom had declined in recent years, local residents have brought it back, saying that community spirit and social interaction remain the main motivations behind the effort. Municipal authorities have also encouraged participation by organizing competitions to select the city's most beautifully decorated streets. As the World Cup approaches, neighborhoods across Rio are once again being transformed into vibrant displays of support for football and national pride."
